Etienne Delaune created this print called "Februari," sometime in the 16th century, a period marked by significant social and religious upheaval. Here we see a composition framed by symbols alluding to classical mythology which gives way to scenes of everyday life in the 16th century. Juxtaposed within the image we find both domestic tranquility and labor. A woman huddles by the fire, while a man brings firewood to the home. Further back, another figure can be seen outdoors chopping wood. Delaune blurs the lines between the intimate and the public spheres by layering these scenes. What does it mean to find comfort indoors? Perhaps it is the labor of men that makes that possible? In this print, Delaune seems to acknowledge both the hardships and small comforts of the everyday. His composition prompts us to consider how these experiences intersect, and how they shape our understanding of the world around us.
