Pyotr Konchalovsky made this juicy, mouth watering, still life painting with paint, sometime in the 20th century. Look at the way the colors are laid on, with big strokes of pure pigment, its easy to imagine the artist standing here working on this, the painting comes alive with that movement. It's not just about what's depicted – the watermelons, grapes, and whatever else is lurking on the table – but about the sheer physicality of the paint itself. Thick, opaque, and unapologetically present, the paint shouts from the canvas. The highlights on that yellow melon, you can almost see the bristles of the brush, like Konchalovsky wants you to know how he did it, and how much he enjoyed doing it. The painting is a celebration of the process, with the textures, colors, and brushstrokes all working together to create a visual feast. It makes me think of those early Fauvist painters, Matisse, Derain, that sense of joy in pure color and form. But Konchalovsky brings his own sensibility to the table, a bit more grounded maybe, with a nod to tradition and the old masters. Art is always a conversation, and this painting is a lively contribution.
