Adrianus Eversen made this study sheet of buildings, including the Sint-Janskathedraal in Den Bosch, using an unknown medium during the 19th century. Here we see a collection of architectural studies, typical of the kind of preparatory work an artist would undertake before a larger painting. Eversen was a Dutch painter known for his cityscapes, and this sheet offers us a glimpse into the artistic process that underpinned those works. The studies suggest a fascination with the ways buildings define public space, and how the church in particular dominates the urban landscape. To understand this work better, one might research the architectural styles prevalent in the Netherlands at the time, and the role of the church in Dutch society. Such resources offer valuable insight into the cultural context in which this study sheet was made.
