This is Robert Frank's photo strip, "Washington Square--Various family S31," and it gives me the feeling of being there, walking through a memory. I imagine Frank walking through Washington Square Park, a camera slung around his neck, his eye constantly scanning the environment. Click. Click. Click. He’s trying to catch a glimpse of humanity amidst the chaos of city life. People mill around, dogs scamper, and the architecture looms in the background. It feels spontaneous, like a snapshot of everyday life, yet so deliberate in its composition. It reminds me of the work of other street photographers, like Garry Winogrand, who also had an eye for capturing the energy and vitality of urban environments. The beauty of photography lies in its ability to capture a moment in time, freezing it forever. Frank is in conversation with all the other artists who try to distill something about life and pin it down. It’s a conversation I am happy to be part of, in my own way.
