So, here's a check from United Health Supply & Savings by Robert Gober. It's an everyday object framed like a precious artwork, kind of flipping the script on what we consider valuable. Gober's not just throwing paint on a canvas, he's meticulously recreating something mundane, giving it this uncanny presence. What strikes me is how Gober deals with texture. It's flat, almost clinical. The stark contrast between the check and the creamy background, makes you focus on the details, like the scrawled handwriting and the torn edge of the paper. There’s a tension between the sterility of the medical world and the personal, slightly vulnerable feel of the handwritten note. It reminds me of some of Vija Celmins' drawings, where she turns ordinary objects into these haunting, almost abstract images. Gober's not giving us answers, he's making us question the value we place on different objects and experiences. Is it about money, health, or the weirdness of everyday life? It’s up for grabs.
