Sally Gabori made this painting, Thundi, with what looks like oil or acrylic paint and a whole lot of pink. Gabori seems to have approached the canvas with a real sense of freedom. The marks are bold and the paint is applied in thick, juicy strokes. It’s all about the process, the energy of the gesture. There's no attempt to hide the hand of the artist. You can almost feel her moving around the canvas. Look at the way she layers the pinks, how some strokes are transparent and others are opaque, creating a shimmering effect. Then there's this one area near the top, a kind of hazy gray that almost grounds the painting, like a shadow. This might remind you of Joan Mitchell's landscapes or maybe even some of Monet’s water lilies, but Gabori brings her own unique vision to the conversation. Art is always a dialogue across time, with each artist adding their own voice. It is not fixed. It changes with each new interpretation.
