Editor: This is Denman Waldo Ross’s "Portrait of a Man," currently at the Harvard Art Museums. It feels like a very personal, almost somber depiction. What strikes you when you look at this piece? Curator: I see a man presented not just as an individual, but as a signifier of a particular societal position. How does his class, suggested by his attire and violin, intersect with notions of masculinity and creative expression? Editor: So, the painting is making a statement about identity? Curator: Exactly. We have to consider how access to instruments and artistic training historically excluded marginalized communities. This portrait then becomes part of a bigger discussion about privilege and representation. Editor: That shifts my perspective entirely. I'll be thinking about that. Curator: Art invites constant reevaluation.
