Menez made this painting called "Figuras" with paint, and perhaps some turpentine to thin it out, resulting in an image where the process of painting feels pretty visible. The ochres, reds, yellows, and blues give a warm and theatrical feel. In fact, the scene reminds me of a play or a costume ball. The paint is applied in layers but remains transparent. The texture is smooth and thin, but in some areas like the yellow dress, the brushstrokes build up, giving it volume and depth. I like how the artist doesn't hide any of the pencil marks or underpainting. The figure in the yellow dress has a directness to the way she looks at us, while the figure in the blue jacket in the background is like a shadow. In his treatment of colour and form, Menez reminds me a little of Bonnard. Ultimately, the meaning of this painting remains open, and that’s one of the things that makes it so compelling.
