This undated print is one of a series of images of Chinese life made by the French artist Gabriel Huquier. The series, likely made in the first half of the 18th century, shows aspects of Chinese culture that Europeans found fascinating: fashion, architecture, and, of course, nature. The composition borrows from the genre of chinoiserie, which was popular at the time. The Rococo style in Europe was characterized by asymmetry and playful uses of Chinese motifs in architecture and the decorative arts. Notice how the artist freely mixes Chinese architectural features with European tastes. This image is an interesting document of the early cultural exchanges between Europe and China. Further research into trade relations during that period might help us understand the intentions behind the creation and distribution of these images. Examining the catalogues of institutions with collections of chinoiserie might clarify how these images were received.
