Eyvind Earle’s ‘Carmel Highlands’ is a landscape rendered in blocks of colour and fine lines, a real testament to process. The layering of these forms gives the image a beautiful, almost dreamlike, depth. Check out the yellow; the way it pushes forward, as if lit from within. Then look at the dark, heavy lines of the trees against the sky. Each element is clearly defined, yet they blend together so seamlessly. You can almost feel the sun on your face and the cool air of the highlands. That contrast, that play of light and dark, it’s what makes this piece so engaging. It reminds me a little of Hiroshige, the Japanese printmaker, in its graphic quality, though Earle’s palette is uniquely his own. It’s a reminder that art is always a conversation, an echo of voices across time and space. Earle invites us to see the landscape not just as it is, but as it could be, a place of beauty, mystery, and endless possibility.
