At the Tate Modern, there's this unknown Victor Pasmore piece, an "Abstract in White, Black, Indian and Lilac," that’s like a visual puzzle. Pasmore’s got these clean lines and blocks, black, white, lilac and red, that float on this white surface. It's not just paint, but assembled forms, pushing out into our space. Check out how the red block sits low and off-center on the right; it's a solid color, contrasting with the airy lilac above it on the left. The white surface looks textured, catching shadows that play with the stark lines. It feels very constructed, almost like a blueprint for a building that never got built. He's like a more serious, British version of Mondrian maybe, but one who decided to build his painting instead of just paint it. Art is never a straight line, it's always bending, mixing, and playing with ideas, so we never really know where it’s going.
