Ridolfo Ghirlandaio made this small oil on wood triptych, depicting the Nativity with Saints, in Florence sometime in the early 16th century. Painting on wood panels was a traditional technique at the time, demanding skill in preparing the surface to achieve that smooth, luminous finish. The application of gesso, layering of paint, and the use of glazes would all have been carefully calibrated. The vivid colors, particularly the blues and reds, are achieved through costly pigments, reflecting the patronage of wealthy elites. Ghirlandaio's mastery lies not only in the precise rendering of figures but also in his handling of light and shadow, creating a sense of depth and realism within a compact space. This triptych, with its careful brushwork and costly materials, embodies the values of Renaissance Florence, and the labour and expense involved in its production. The choice of such valuable materials underscores the sponsor’s wealth and the cultural importance attached to religious imagery.
