Luc-Albert Moreau made "Zittende bokser" which roughly translates to "Sitting Boxer" using printmaking techniques. The boxer is caught between rounds, sitting on what looks like a dark draped chair, the artist capturing a moment of introspection. You can see the ghost of the crowd behind him, who are perhaps baying for more blood. The whole scene is rendered in these incredibly delicate but assertive strokes that remind me of some of Degas’s more intimate works. I wonder what Moreau was thinking about as he was working on the composition, the dark marks balanced with the light airy ones. The cape slung over the boxer's shoulder is especially affecting; the image conveys both physical strength, but also vulnerability. All mark-making somehow relates to other mark-making. It’s one big conversation over time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Each picture embraces uncertainty and ambiguity, allowing for multiple readings.
