Larry Fink made this photograph, Peter Beard and Margot Ramone, Montauk, New York, sometime in the twentieth century. I love the greyscale and how the light seems to just cling to the foregrounded details. Fink’s printing process really brings out the texture of everything. Look at the surface of the table, littered with dishes and glasses, and see how the film grain makes it almost palpable. You can practically feel the condensation on the glass and hear the clinking of silverware. It's like a Caravaggio painting, but with the flashbulb immediacy of a snapshot. The way the light falls on Margot Ramone's face, soft and hazy, gives her an almost dreamlike quality. I find myself reminded of Nan Goldin, though Fink’s work has its own, very particular, rawness. Ultimately, it’s about capturing a moment, an atmosphere, and a feeling more than anything else.
