Max Weber, born in Russia in 1881, made this print, Pewter Cup, using lithography. Weber emigrated to the United States as a child. His Jewish identity and immigrant experience profoundly shaped his artistic vision. Weber was part of the early 20th-century avant-garde movement, and his work reflects the influence of Cubism and Fauvism. Here, the play of light and shadow across the cups evokes a sense of quiet contemplation. Still life as a genre, often relegated to the domestic sphere, frequently features the objects of daily life. Weber used these objects to explore form, space, and the emotional resonance of the everyday. How do these simple objects invite us to reflect on the beauty and complexity of the ordinary moments that make up a life?
