These two golden ornamented frames were made by Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries. It makes me wonder, what did he intend to place inside them? These shapes aren’t thrown down in a hurry; the ornamental details are made with a steady hand, so I imagine he made them with care and consideration. It feels calm, balanced, and serene. I imagine him carefully painting each little leaf and swirl, holding his breath to keep his hand steady. It’s interesting how these gilded forms, with their decorative details, feel both traditional and modern at the same time. I like to think about how all artists engage in an ongoing conversation, exchanging ideas across time and inspiring one another’s creativity. This piece reminds me that painting is a form of expression, embracing uncertainty, and allowing for many interpretations.
