Carle Vanloo painted "Halt of the Hunt," now at the Metropolitan Museum, depicting a hunting party at rest, their elaborate attire a stark contrast to the natural setting. Here, the recurring motif of leisure amongst the elite echoes motifs found in Renaissance garden scenes and classical bacchanals, these latter, riotous gatherings are often filled with wine, dance, and song. Yet, unlike the wild abandon of a bachanallian gathering, the figures here maintain a composed sensibility. Consider the dogs in the foreground. Often symbols of loyalty and fidelity, their presence tethers this scene to the domestic sphere, even in this outdoor revelry. The reclining figure, seemingly in repose, mimics classical sculptures of slumbering gods, hinting at a lineage of artistic representation.
