Holger Hansen made this drawing of a pewter coffee pot without a date, and the process is a real slow burn. It's all about tone, about the different greys, from deep charcoal to near white, that give this pot its sheen and its form. Look at the way the light rolls across the belly of the pot, so smooth and slick. It's really something to get this sort of luster with what looks like pencil or charcoal. That handle is pure graphic, almost sliced from the pot itself. It's so different from the body, which feels more classical. You can almost see Hansen thinking here, working out the object in marks. Makes me think of Morandi, but with the plainest of means. These objects sitting on a table quietly thinking about line and form.
