This is Willem van Senus's portrait of Willem I Frederik, King of the Netherlands, made with watercolour on paper. The portrait is contained within an oval frame, creating a formal and contained composition. Willem is depicted in his royal attire, a blue coat adorned with gold epaulettes and a prominent star. The symmetry of the composition, with the figure centered and framed, emphasizes the subject's status. The softness of the watercolor medium lends a delicate quality to the image, contrasting with the regality of the subject. The colour palette, dominated by blues and golds, reinforces this semiotic of power and authority. Yet, the softness of the execution perhaps challenges the very notion of fixed, unassailable power. The portrait can be seen not just as a representation of authority, but also an engagement with ideas of identity, representation, and cultural value. The formal qualities of the portrait, therefore, operate within a larger cultural and philosophical discourse, challenging us to continually re-interpret its meaning.
