These beige silk braids with tassels were made by Gustav Schnitzler. It’s interesting to think about how the most basic elements come together to form something like this. How the artist uses braiding to create a sense of depth and texture. These braids are so tactile, you can almost feel the softness of the silk just by looking at them. The gentle palette adds to this sensory experience. The tassels feel light and airy, almost like wisps of smoke. This piece seems to hover between the functional and the purely decorative. The meticulous process of braiding creates a sense of order, yet the loose, flowing tassels introduce an element of playful chaos. It’s a beautiful balance. They remind me of the work of Sheila Hicks, who also explores the possibilities of fiber and textile. Like Hicks, Schnitzler embraces the ambiguity of art, inviting us to find our own meaning in the work.
