Jeanne Françoise Ozanne created this landscape etching, "Flodlandskab med kvinde og barn", sometime in the late 18th century. The eye is immediately drawn to the balanced composition, bisected horizontally by the river and vertically by the central tree. This structure divides the scene into distinct yet harmonious planes. Ozanne’s use of line is particularly striking. Notice how delicate, almost imperceptible strokes define the sky, contrasting with the sharper, more deliberate lines that delineate the figures and foreground elements. Semiotically, we can see how the scene represents a shifting social landscape. The pastoral idyll with mother and child in the foreground opposes the industrial structures, like the bridge in the background, and the traveling bourgeois conveyed by horse and carriage.
