Curatorial notes
This is “Aantekening uit collectie August Allebé,” a note from August Allebé, made sometime around 1915, probably with a pen or pencil on paper. What strikes me is the way the artist has layered the text, crossing out phrases and adding new ones, as if the act of writing itself is a form of exploration. The density of the marks creates a rich texture, almost like a dense thicket of lines. Some words are legible, while others are obscured, inviting us to piece together fragments of meaning. I find myself drawn to the looping lines, which have a rhythmic quality to them. It reminds me of automatic writing, where the hand moves freely, guided by the subconscious. It reminds me of Cy Twombly, who also used handwriting and mark-making in a similar way. Ultimately, it's a reminder that art is about the process, the journey of discovery, and the freedom to embrace ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
