This lace collar design in white ink on black cardboard was made by J.H. Pleging-Faber, and it’s a real study in contrasts. It looks like an artist working out an idea. The stark white ink is so assertive against the velvety black. Look closely at the way the ink sits on the cardboard. You can almost feel the slight drag of the pen or brush, the way it might have skipped a little, leaving a subtle texture. Notice that one particular flourish near the center - it looks like a tiny stylized leaf, and how it anchors that whole section with its precision. It's these details that really make it sing. It puts me in mind of Hilma af Klint’s drawings, or maybe Agnes Martin’s more graphic works, where line and form become almost meditative. It's a reminder that art is a conversation, always building on what came before. And what comes next is up to you.
