Jan Groover made this chromogenic print, Tybee Forks and Starts (A), focusing on humble kitchenalia. The colour palette is unreal, a rosy copper suffuses the image. Immediately I’m thinking about artmaking as a process, taking these very mundane objects and completely transforming the way that we look at them. The objects, a fork, knife and glass, are presented in a way that abstracts them, and the lighting makes them seem unreal, heightening the intensity of the image. The surface is smooth, and the colours are saturated which lends it a sensual quality. There’s an intimacy about the arrangement of the objects. Notice the handle of the knife, diving into the glass. It seems so deliberate. It creates this dynamic tension in the image as a whole. The work reminds me a little of Giorgio Morandi's still life paintings, finding the sublime in the ordinary. Ultimately, Groover’s work reminds us that art is an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas, allowing for many different interpretations.
