George Hendrik Breitner sketched this view of buildings, possibly in Scheveningen, using a rapid, minimal approach. The lines, sparse and economical, barely contain the forms they suggest, leaving much to the viewer's imagination. Breitner’s sketch reflects a move towards capturing the essence of a scene. The structure of the buildings is hinted at through horizontal and vertical lines, creating a sense of depth and space, even without traditional perspective. The quick strokes give a sense of immediacy, characteristic of an artist more interested in impression than detailed replication. This work challenges conventional artistic values. By not adhering to traditional techniques, Breitner destabilizes established notions of what constitutes a finished work. This openness invites interpretation, allowing viewers to engage with the artwork on their own terms.
