This sepia photograph captures a view of Kasteel Doorwerth. It's been attributed to an anonymous photographer from Monumentenzorg. I'm curious about the photographer’s process in creating this faded scene. I can imagine they set up their camera, carefully composing the frame to capture the castle’s reflection in the water. There's something ghostly about the way the building blends with its surroundings. The monochromatic palette simplifies the scene, reducing the textures and details to their most fundamental forms. The building itself seems to be emerging from the water; a process of unearthing. I can imagine being there, breathing in the misty air as the castle’s reflection shimmers in the water. Photography has offered artists a new way of seeing the world, providing new opportunities for image-making. As painters, we can borrow from these different forms to enhance our understanding. By embracing the uncertainty of art we can reflect on its ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations.
