This is an anonymous view of the Château de Madrid in Paris, made using etching and watercolor. The Château was built in the 16th century, a symbol of royal power and extravagance under King Francis I, but by the time this print was made, it had fallen into disrepair. Although the artist remains unknown, we can still imagine the social milieu it represents. Look at the figures strolling in the foreground, their elaborate dress signals wealth and status. The presence of carriages and horseback riders further underlines a world of leisure afforded to the privileged few. Consider the gaze of the artist as they chose to represent this scene. Who was this artwork for? This print presents a unique perspective on power and social class. It reminds us that our view of history is always partial, shaped by those who had the means to record and share their experiences. What stories remain untold?
