M. Hemeleers-van Houter made this artwork of soldiers with unknown media. Here, rows of military figures strike a balance between uniformity and individuality. Each is distinguished by slight variations in posture and accoutrements; they command a formal presence despite their diminutive scale. The composition functions as a grid, an arrangement of figures that invites a structuralist reading. The use of color is restrained yet strategic, with the red, blue, and yellow serving as semiotic markers that point to larger cultural codes of nationhood, duty, and honor. The yellow, in particular, punctuates the composition and draws the eye across the field of figures. This choice of color creates rhythm and provides a sense of order. Considered formally, the artwork destabilizes fixed meanings. It prompts us to question not only the aesthetic choices but also the ideological underpinnings of military representation.
