Walter Tittle made this print, "Early American," using etching, and the way he works the ink is so compelling. You can see the process, like the history of its making, right on the surface. The plate has this incredible range of grays and blacks, from the almost velvety darks in the background to the delicate lines defining her face. The etched lines create a sense of depth and texture, especially in the shawl and the details of her hat. The way the light catches her face, those tiny wrinkles around her eyes, it's all so tenderly observed. I love how the etching marks build up the form, not just describing it, but almost feeling it into being. It reminds me a little of Whistler’s etchings, but with a more intimate feel. Tittle captures a quiet dignity in this woman, a sense of resilience and character that speaks to the power of portraiture. And for me, that's what art is all about: finding beauty in the everyday and celebrating the stories etched on our faces.
