Alexej von Jawlensky made this painting called Saviour's Face: Distant King - Buddha II, probably with oil on board. It's like he's conjuring a presence through these shapes and colours, right? I can imagine Jawlensky, in his studio, maybe late in the day, really focused on the essence of this face, those linear marks building the features, and how the colours sit next to each other to create a kind of glow. I wonder if he was thinking about the spiritual quality of the image as it began to emerge? There's this sense of quiet contemplation in the long vertical lines, and the simple use of colour which almost vibrates. The way he uses line to define the nose and eyes reminds me a little of early Picasso. Painters are always in conversation with each other, it's like we're all riffing on the same themes. Anyway, the artist's process embraces this ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations, inviting you to bring your own experiences and understanding to it.
