Hendrick Avercamp rendered this watercolor and pen drawing of a peasant in the pose of a man pushing a wheelbarrow, sometime before 1634. Avercamp lived during the Dutch Golden Age, a period of economic prosperity and artistic flourishing in the Netherlands, but also a time marked by stark social stratification. Avercamp, who was deaf, specialized in winter landscapes populated with figures from all walks of life.
