This untitled piece by Ronnie Landfield is like a page torn from a sketchbook, maybe made with crayons or oil pastels. I like the way the colours – the yellows, greens, and purples – are laid down flat, in a simple, almost childlike way. It reminds me that making art is just like playing. Look at that purple lozenge, sitting there like a little UFO. It's not perfect, it's got some wobbly edges, and the colour's not totally even, but that's what makes it so charming! It's like Landfield’s saying, "Hey, it's okay to be a little messy." The lines remind me of Agnes Martin but the purple lozenge is like a Joan Miro shape. That’s the beauty of art, right? It’s not about getting everything perfect; it's about putting something down and seeing what happens.
