Albrecht Altdorfer made this intricate metalcut, titled 'Arion and a Nereid,' sometime in the early 16th century. During the Renaissance, classical myths were often reimagined through the lens of contemporary values and aesthetics. Here, we see Arion, a musician from ancient Greece, famed for his enchanting music. In the original myth, Arion is rescued by a dolphin. This version includes a Nereid, a sea nymph from Greek mythology. She holds an anchor, symbolizing safety and rescue at sea. She embodies the feminine divine, adding layers of complexity to the narrative. Altdorfer's personal experiences and beliefs are subtly woven into the scene. The choice to depict the figures nude is a reflection of Renaissance ideals, and the artist's decision to include the Nereid might speak to his own understanding of classical stories. It is a harmonious blend of classical mythology and Renaissance interpretation.
