Editor: François Rouget's "The Playing of the Violon" is rendered in such fine lines. The musician seems completely lost in his own world, perched on what looks like a castle window. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Well, this image sings to me of solitude, doesn't it? The musician, seemingly removed from the world by the stone window frame, reminds me of the Romantic era's fascination with the individual's inner life. Do you think he's playing a mournful tune or a joyful one? Editor: The light definitely makes me think it's more of a sad song. I hadn't really considered it in that context, though. Thanks! Curator: Anytime. Art is about feeling, not just knowing, right?
