Kawada Shōryō made this painting of peacocks and magnolias, likely in the late 19th century, using ink and color on silk. The silk itself provides a subtle, warm ground, its texture almost disappearing beneath the detailed painting. Look closely, and you'll notice the meticulous brushwork that brings the peacocks to life. Shōryō skillfully renders each feather with individual strokes, capturing their iridescent sheen. The blossoming magnolia branch is equally detailed, the delicate white petals contrasting beautifully with the birds' rich plumage. Consider the labor involved in creating such a piece. From preparing the silk to grinding the inks and carefully applying each layer of color, this painting reflects hours of focused, skilled work. This dedication to craft elevates the painting beyond mere representation; it becomes an embodiment of patience and artistic mastery. Appreciating the artistry means recognizing the time, skill, and cultural value embedded in its making.

Since around 1700, peacocks were imported into Japan. Two such peacocks are standing here close to each other on a blooming magnolia tree. Both are placed in the upper right corner, one being almost completely hidden behind the other and only his head and feet are visible. The long and bright feathers of the peacock in the front reach outside the picture and return into the bottom. In contrast to the ostentatious, intricately painted feathers, simple, white blooming magnolias dominate the lower part of the picture.
