This diminutive drawing, Madonna and Child, was made by an anonymous artist using pen and brown ink on paper. Although seemingly simple, the drawing technique allows us to appreciate the artist's skilled hand. Notice the density of the lines, which creates areas of shadow and volume. The repeated strokes of the pen transform a blank sheet into an intimate portrayal of mother and child. The artist would have needed a steady hand and precise control of the pen to achieve this level of detail. Despite its small size, the drawing invites us to contemplate the labor involved in its creation. The repetitive action of drawing countless lines, and building up the image, makes visible the artistic process. The drawing becomes a testament to the artist's dedication to their craft, achieved through hours of work.
