Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing for an armchair with pencil, we don’t know exactly when. Look at how the lines hover and suggest a form, rather than prescribe one. It reminds me of the way artists work through ideas, how one mark leads to another. You can feel the artist figuring things out on the page, in real time. I love the little dog perched on top of the chair back; it adds a touch of whimsy to the otherwise functional design. It’s like Cachet couldn't resist adding a bit of personality to his creation! The texture of the paper too, with its slight imperfections and the way the pencil glides across its surface, gives the drawing a tactile quality. It’s as if you can feel the artist's hand moving across the page. This drawing reminds me of sketches by graphic designer Alvin Lustig, both have an interest in furniture design, but moreover share a similar sense of playfulness. Ultimately, art is about exploration and embracing the unknown.
