This is a glass beaker, made by Anton Kothgasser. Its clear upper section is adorned with intricate paintings, while the lower section shines with gold luster. The beaker is structured in distinct horizontal registers that create a visual hierarchy. The detailed scene of a bird in a lush landscape wraps around the clear glass, framed above a band of dark red meander pattern. The transition to the gold section is abrupt and the ornamental fluting at the base contrasts with the smooth, reflective surface above. The overall impression is one of carefully ordered, decorative opulence. This order is a reflection of both Neoclassical and Biedermeier aesthetics, where clean lines and symmetry were valued. Yet, the exotic, almost Romantic imagery of the bird introduces an element of naturalism and freedom within this structured space.
