Eileen Agar's "The Shell" is a dreamy space conjured through oil paint. You can almost feel the way the paint was dragged across the surface, those purposeful trails she left behind. Agar wasn't trying to hide her process. I love the way the form is both present and absent, the geometric planes suggest the figure is just beyond perception. I keep coming back to that cool blue line that defines the profile. It reminds me how a simple mark can carry so much weight. It’s like she is asking us, what is real, what is imagined? In some ways, she's in conversation with artists like Picasso, but Agar's touch is all her own. Art's not about answers, right? It's about keeping the questions alive.
