Here's a print by Jan Kubicek featuring a square divided into geometric forms using black and green ink. I can almost feel the artist carefully lining up the edges of the paper, thinking about the exact placement of each shape, each color. It is very precise, and I think of him working slowly, deliberately, to create an image that is both visually striking and intellectually stimulating. I like the way that Kubicek used geometry to create a sense of tension and balance in his work. The black and green triangles push and pull against each other, creating a dynamic composition. They are flat and unyielding. It makes me think of other artists playing with geometry in unexpected ways. Ultimately, painting is like being in a conversation with other painters across time, and it's exciting to see how Kubicek took up this conversation and made it his own.
