Janos Mattis-Teutsch made this painting, named Composition, with oil on canvas, and, wow, is it red! The artist builds up this visual space through geometric blocks of color and line. It's all about layers and creating something new out of simple shapes. You see, the painting emerges through trial, error, intuition, and a little bit of chance. I can imagine the artist, Mattis-Teutsch, stepping back, squinting, tilting his head, maybe muttering to himself… The paint isn't too thick, but you can feel the texture. There are these great diagonal strokes of green, like bars, which cut through the circles of color. They're colliding and creating a conversation within the painting. It feels both joyful and dissonant. This reminds me a little of Kandinsky, the way he uses color and form to evoke emotion. I think artists are always in conversation with one another, borrowing ideas, pushing boundaries. Painting is all about ambiguity, isn't it? Embracing the uncertain and finding new ways of seeing.
