Georges Valmier’s 'Flowers and Fruit' is pure visual pleasure, a kaleidoscope of shapes and colours laid down with a steady hand and a playful heart. Imagine the artist piecing together this puzzle, each colour singing out against its neighbour. You know, making a painting is like having a conversation with yourself. I imagine Valmier pondering where to put that next circle, how to balance the warm pinks with the cool blues. There's a real sense of joy in his shapes, each one feels like a little discovery. The surfaces are smooth, the paint thin. There is no visible brushwork, so the shapes appear unified. What I like best is the checkboard, a wonderful contrast to all the flat colours. Painters are always riffing off each other, you know? Valmier takes from cubism and adds his own cheerful spin. It’s not about copying but keeping the conversation going, adding your voice to the mix. And that's the beauty of painting. It's a place for all possibilities.
