This is Vilhelm Kyhn's illustration for O. Specter's "Fabler for Børn" or "Fables for Children." Kyhn lived during Denmark's Golden Age. This was a period of national romanticism, as artists sought to define Danish identity through art. Kyhn himself was deeply invested in portraying the Danish landscape and rural life, and became known for his idealized depictions of the Danish countryside. In this etching, we see a large dog sitting patiently as a small dog stands on its hind legs, perhaps begging or performing. The contrast in size and posture suggests a dynamic of power and subservience. The image raises questions about social hierarchy and the roles we play within it. Kyhn's choice to depict animals in human-like situations invites us to reflect on our own behaviors and relationships. The piece reflects the societal norms and expectations of Kyhn's time, yet through its simplicity, it encourages us to find meaning in the everyday and to consider the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves.
