S.O. Goenoengsari. Achteraanzicht fabriek. 30-4-27. 1927

This is a black and white photograph of S.O. Goenoengsari Factory, taken on April 30th, 1927 by an anonymous artist. I can imagine them looking through the lens, trying to capture this landscape. I wonder, what drew them to this factory? Maybe they were trying to make sense of a changing world, new forms of labour and the scale of industry, all rendered in shades of gray. Look at the contrast between the sharp lines of the buildings and the soft tones of the sky. And those columns, they make me think of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Even in its stillness, this photograph feels alive with the energy of the factory, and the exchange between the artist behind the lens and the world unfolding before them. I can only imagine how many stories are within its walls.
