Hans Hinterreiter made this untitled image with screen printing, and what grabs me is how he’s not trying to hide the process. I can almost see him pushing the ink through the screen, layering those colours one by one. There’s something about the texture and the slightly uneven edges that makes it feel human, even though the shapes are so precise. I love the way the colours play off each other – the red fighting against the dark backdrop, the orange popping like little bursts of sunshine. Look at the way the shapes fit together, like a puzzle that’s both chaotic and totally resolved. It reminds me a little of Bridget Riley’s work, but with a kind of handmade, punk-rock vibe. Ultimately, this piece feels like a reminder that art doesn’t always have to be perfect. Sometimes, the real magic happens in the mess and the making.
