Samuel Buri made this painting, "Simon dans le choux" with a real gusto for paint; it's not polite, it’s raw! Buri is letting it all hang out, and I get the sense that he's not overly concerned with being too precious or careful. You can see the energy in the way he’s applied the paint, how the colours blend into each other and bleed into the surrounding space. Look at the blues and reds, how they mix and make a sort of violet shadow, it feels kind of arbitrary, but then it kind of works... For me, the joy of this piece is in how it feels unresolved, imperfect. It’s like Buri is saying, “Here it is, take it or leave it,” which reminds me of some of Philip Guston's later work. Ultimately it's about the spirit of experimentation, the idea that art can embrace imperfection and ambiguity, and that sometimes the most interesting things happen when you let go of control and just let the materials do their thing.
