This is a pen and brown ink study for the Disputa, drawn by Raphael sometime in the early 16th century. Here, Raphael works out his composition by building up layer upon layer of hatching. With each stroke of the pen, he coaxes form out of the flat surface of the paper. We can follow the artist's process, his mind at work. See how he uses denser clusters of lines to suggest shadow and volume. The overall effect is one of dynamic tension. It's anything but photographic. Of course, the labor here is not just Raphael's. Paper making in the Renaissance was a highly skilled occupation, and the ink itself, carefully compounded. The drawing is a record of intellectual activity and physical work, made visible to us centuries later. The artist engages with skilled traditions alongside those of fine arts, reflecting wider social issues of labor, politics, and consumption. By attending to material, making, and context, we can understand the full meaning of this drawing.
