This small sepia toned photograph shows Wilhelmina Gerarda Hoogendijk with her three children. The composition is simple, but the monochrome palette gives everything a soft focus, like memory itself. Looking closely, you can almost feel the textures – the fuzzy fur of the mother's stole, the stiff straw of the children's hats, the smooth skin of their faces. The light is evenly distributed and shadows are very subtle. It all creates a sense of depth that almost feels sculptural. The details, the careful arrangement, they all pull you in. The artist is unknown, but there is a timelessness to the image that recalls similar themes and family portraits throughout art history. It reminds me a bit of a Paula Modersohn-Becker painting, where there's a rawness and directness, but also a deep connection to the figures portrayed.
