Gerhard von Kügelgen rendered this intriguing drawing, "Winged Youth Accompanied by a Bat, Holding Snakes in his Hands (Genius of Evil)," at an unknown date. Kügelgen lived through tumultuous times marked by significant social and political upheaval, including the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Note the figure of a muscular, nude youth, complete with bat wings and snakes in his hands. This iconography reflects the era's fascination with classical mythology and Romanticism. The figure challenges conventional notions of good and evil. The winged youth, typically associated with angels or divine beings, is here linked with snakes and bats, creatures often symbolizing darkness. The complexity invites us to consider how societal values shape our understanding of morality. The piece embodies the tensions between reason and emotion, order and chaos, prevalent in a time of great social change. The genius of evil, however, is a gendered one, with the male youth as its embodiment. Perhaps Kügelgen is asking us to consider what precisely is being vanquished, and who, in turn, is being elevated?
