Curatorial notes
Christoffel van Sichem II created this woodcut, "Christus aan het kruis," the ‘Christ on the Cross’, likely sometime in the early 17th century. The print’s composition is dominated by the imposing crosses and the contorted bodies suspended upon them. Notice how the lines create a dense, almost claustrophobic texture, emphasizing the suffering and chaos of the crucifixion scene. The artist's use of contrasting light and shadow heightens the drama, drawing our eyes to the figure of Christ at the center, flanked by two other crucified figures. Here, the artist's manipulation of form and space serves not just a narrative purpose but also engages with the viewer's emotional and psychological state. The dense, chaotic composition mirrors the theological and existential turmoil surrounding the crucifixion. The lack of a clear, open space challenges the viewer, disrupting any easy sense of resolution. This formal tension underscores a deeper commentary on faith, sacrifice, and the instability of meaning.
